We have been exclusively engaged to support a Controller search, having previously helped identify and place a Staff Accountant for the company two years ago. This is a rare opportunity to join a long-established, family office with a 65+ year track record. The Controller will lead the full-cycle accounting function for a diversified portfolio and is ideal for a hands-on accounting professional who enjoys working in a close-knit team and thrives in a low-stress, collaborative office environment. The position is fully onsite at the corporate office and offers a generous total compensation package.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and mentor 2 Staff Accountants 
  • Oversee all full-cycle accounting: monthly, quarterly, and annual close
  • Maintain and reconcile rent rolls and lease records
  • Manage banking, cash operations, reporting with external investors (e.g., profit-sharing contributions, calculate AB-150 taxes, distribute K-1’s, etc.)
  • Handle weekly payroll, payroll taxes, and HR administration (e.g., maintain HR files, workers compensation administration, benefits administration/renewals, etc.)
  • Coordinate with external CPA for tax preparation and audit processes
  • Lead insurance renewals and claims processing 
  • Prepare and monitor property budgets and support capital improvement projects
  • Process various licenses, fees, taxes, and agency administration
  • Track and reconcile labor cost data
  • Manage 2 upcoming debt refinances
  • Support aging property needs, including deferred maintenance and renovations
  • Facilitate Energy Star reporting requirements
  • Partner with property managers, payroll vendors, and insurance brokers
  • Manage accounting software and coordinate IT administration. Support transition from Sage 300 CRE to AppFolio, targeted within 2 years
  • Help modernize operations: reduce check usage, increase ACH payments
  • Annual file purging and clean up 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of managerial accounting experience within real estate, property management or a family office environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and AppFolio 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proficient in Sage
  • Prior experience as a sole accountant or part of a small accounting team
  • Familiarity with property management accounting for residential and commercial assets
  • Strong knowledge of full-cycle accounting, payroll, and cash operations
  • Demonstrated success implementing accounting or property management software
  • Comfortable working with manual processes and leading process automation initiatives
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with internal and external stakeholders
  • Flexible, detail-oriented, and proactive in identifying and resolving issues
  • Experience coordinating benefit renewals and insurance policies
Salary Range: $120,000 – $125,000*
